Development Background

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Ken McRight - Developer of the Original Bye-Bye Decubiti Cushion
Ken McRight - Developer of the Original Bye-Bye Decubiti Cushion

Only one year after Ken McRight was shot and paralyzed in a Dallas nightclub, he had started to develop angry red spots on his buttocks from continual sitting.

The year was 1950 and Ken recalls one therapist telling him to "get used to it . . . you will suffer from pressure sores for the rest of your life!"

This problem led Ken to try many seating surfaces. From those trials came the concept of sitting on air and today's modern wheelchair cushions.

By 1951, Ken had arrived at a solution for his problem - a soft rubber cushion inflated to a point where Ken's buttocks were nicely nested within. Ken named his cushion the Bye-Bye Decubiti - now commonly known as the BBD Cushion.

For nearly twenty-five years the BBD Cushion was produced in Brooklyn, New York.  In 1974, production moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Throughout those fifty years, Ken McRight tirelessly pursued the promotion of the cushion, showing it at trade shows nationwide.

Rand-Scot, Inc., purchased the Ken McRight company in the year 2000, when Ken McRight retired.  The BBD Cushion acquisition completes a circle for Rand-Scot's president, Joel Lerich.

Lerich, injured overseas in 1974, used a BBD cushion when he flew home. In 1980, Lerich invented the EasyPivot to help him with transfers to and from his wheelchair. He met Ken McRight in 1985 at a trade show and the two spent many hours over the next fifteen years discussing cushions, transferring, and life.

The two companies, Ken McRight Supplies and Rand-Scot, shared the show circuit and even had a mutual sales representative.

It was a natural succession that Rand-Scot would end up manufacturing and marketing the BBD Cushion.
